AN ANALYSIS INTO THE IMPACT OF STANDARDS ON THE OPERATION OF SLOVENIAN COMPANIES

1 Introduction

Over the past forty years, standardization has developed to such an extent that
companies can actually no longer do business without knowing, complying with
and using different standards. Several international surveys have already shown
and defined positive effects of standards on business viability of companies
(Cebr 2015; ISO 2014; Blind, Jungmittag, Mangelsdorf 2011).

One of the key aspects of national standards bodies’ mission should be to liaise
and actively cooperate with all stakeholders, to include them in an appropriate
manner into standardization, and to help them make the best use of standards.
In this context, it is essential that the competent authority is able to demonstrate
tangible benefits brought to organizations by standards, and thereby
                       to citizens and the society.

This Research Report first defines standard and classification of standards,
then present the role of standards in the operation of companies. At the same
time, the Report presents the Slovenian national standards body, the
Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), and its stakeholders. The Report
further defines the main objectives and purpose of the research, describes the
methodology of implementation, and also defines the research questions and
hypotheses. The data and information have been obtained through reviewing
the bibliography and the sources, through indicative and in-depth interviews,
and through using a survey questionnaire and several good practice studies.
