2nd
CEN/CENELEC PR Round Table
-
The second CEN/CENELEC PR
Round Table, held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on 6 and 7 October 2005 under
the slogan “Twist and shout: Getting your message through”, gathered over
40 public relations and communications experts from 29 national standards
bodies from all over Europe to discuss common issues related to the
promotion of standardization work within Europe.
-
-
The round table was hosted by
the Slovenian Institute for Standardization, SIST. The event was chaired
by Bernhard Mertens, Advisor to Directorate Corporate of CENELEC, and
co-organised by Ruth Seibicke, PR Manager of CEN and Geneviève Feyt, PR
and Communications Manager of CENELEC. The participants were warmly
welcomed to the event by dr. Bogdan Topiè, President of SIST, who
presented the recent view of CEN and CENELEC business strategy for the
next five years.
-
-
Upon special invitation by
SIST, the round table was also joined by Mrs. Vered Oren from the
Standards Institution of Israel - SII, who presented a non-European
perspective and experience on the management of public relations and
promotion of standardization activities in a small Near East country. Mrs.
Oren, SII’s Spokesperson and Director of PR, delivered a very interesting
presentation that covered different ways of promotion of events that SII
organizes through campaigns in Israel. Among these, the National Quality
Week has special importance and wide public support and media coverage.
-
-
Using both plenary sessions
and workshop groups, the first day focused on cross national co-operation.
The participants split into three groups to prepare ideas and proposals
dealing with bilateral and regional co-operation between different NSBs in
the effort to benefit from common work on the national/regional level.
After the official part the participants enjoyed a guided tour through the
city centre.
-
-
The topic of Workshop 2 was
‘Crisis management’. The participants were confronted with different
situations of “a crisis” presented by CEN and CENELEC PR managers. For
each of the examples the anticipated reactions of persons involved in
potential crises were discussed, first in groups and later presented to
all. At the end of this workshop a proposal of the ‘Code of Conduct’ with
the media from CEN and CENELEC was introduced.
-
-
The second day concentrated on
the best practice examples at national level presented by six NSBs (AFNOR,
NEN, ON, BSI, SFS and SIS), and continued with an example of successful
website launch and management by SIST.
-
-
There followed a presentation
on the proposal of common CEN/CENELEC communications strategy with the
common rights and obligations of PR representatives. The participants went
through three actual cases in order to find the correct way of
communication with the relevant stakeholder(s).
-
-
The highlight of the event was
the presentation of the first CEN/CENELEC PR Awards in four different
categories. The Best annual report was issued by the
Danish Standards Association. SIS, the
Swedish Standards Institute, won the award for best brochure for their
“Money doesn’t make the world go around”. The best website contribution
was recognized to BSI for their Education website. The best advertising
campaign, namely a short film on certification of construction products,
was prepared by the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI).
-
-
In his speech at the end of
the second day, Mr. Olivier Gourlay, member of CENELEC CA, concluded that
the round table represented a positive step in terms of strengthening the
awareness that in order to reach “effective and efficient communication”,
all the participating CEN and CENELEC members must use a common manner of
communication in public relations and communication with the stakeholder(s).
-
-
The next CEN/CENELEC PR round
table is scheduled for
Stockholm, Sweden,
on the kind invitation of SIS.

Participation of SIST experts in the SMAQVa project in
Macedonia
-
-
By signing a service
contact with Euroconsultants S. A., a Greek company providing consulting
services for the international and domestic business arena, the Slovenian
Institute for Standardization (SIST) entered the SMAQVa project (Technical
Assistance to the Institutes of Standardization, Accreditation, Metrology
and Quality Validation) for the Republic of Macedonia as the provider of
consultancy services in the field of standardization and
standardization-related activities for the Standardization Institute of
the Republic of Macedonia (ISRM).
-
-
SIST experts will organize
and run workshops on various standardization-related topics. Particular
emphasis will be placed on the role and tasks of national standards
bodies, development and understanding of processes in the adoption of
European and international standards, and on conditions for successful
management of technical working bodies and other groups operating within a
national standards body. The workshops will be a good opportunity for SIST
experts and ISRM employees to discuss and perform practical work in
standardization processes.
-
-
This project represents the
first opportunity for SIST to evince its potential as a consultancy
institution, receive favourable recommendations for future projects and
get practical experience in the cooperation in a European project financed
from the European Commission’s PHARE programme.

Dear
Sir / Madam,
In February 2004, the European Commission
adopted a Communication entitled The integration of environmental aspects
into standardisation . This Communication provides the basis for advancing
the protection of our environment and at the same time encouraging European
businesses to establish a solid platform for sustainable growth. Indeed,
European standardisation offers great potential to advance the protection of
our environment, whilst industry can be certain of making future safe
investments, as products and processes will be compatible and interoperable.
The Communication aims to encourage the three
European Standardisation Organisations (CEN, CENELEC and ETS ), National
Standards Bodies, public authorities, NGOs and business/ industry groups,
who are all involved in writing standards, to consider the environmental
aspects of the subjects they cover with a view to establishing sustainable
patterns of development. The Communication foresees two Workshops/ Seminars
in order to develop further the different means agreed between stakeholders
as a way of moving the situation forward.
S ST, as a new member of CEN and CENELEC has got
a unique opportunity to invite all responsible parties for the environmental
policies in the EU and all active stakeholders in various fields of
standardisation at European and national level to discuss and contribute to
the common goal of integration of potential environmental aspects into
European standards.
We therefore have the pleasure of inviting you to the Seminar
Environmental aspects and European standardisation on 16th November 2004 at
9.00 a.m. in Grand Hotel Toplice, Bled, Slovenia.
The Seminar will address four main issues:
• How to increase the use of environmental tools such as checklists, guides
and helpdesks?
• How to ensure that all interested stakeholders are represented during the
standards elaboration process?
• How can training contribute to the development of environmental thinking
amongst the technical experts who write standards?
• How can the development of standards with minimal impact on the
environment contribute to business development?
In the light of your experience with the
European standardisation system, we are looking forward to your active
participation at the Seminar and contribution to the achievement of our
objective the promotion of environmental protection requirements in
standardisation activities.
